Exploring Sustainable Heat Solutions: UK Delegation Visits T.Loop
"Stockholm Data Parks exemplify how data centres can be seamlessly integrated into a city's energy ecosystem, and T.Loop is at the forefront of this innovation. Our visit validated our thinking for Silicon Sands, Blackpool and reinforced that reusing excess heat from data centres is not just an environmental necessity—it's an economic and social opportunity. Stockholm has become an inspiration for us, demonstrating how digital infrastructure can deliver tangible community benefits. Alongside our work on heat reuse, we are also looking to emulate the success of Stockholm's Stokab model, ensuring that publicly owned fibre underpins regional growth and digital inclusion. By bringing these principles to the UK, we aim to show that digital progress and sustainability go hand in hand."
— Tony Doyle, Head of ICT Services, Blackpool Council and Chair of Co-operative Network Infrastructure (CNI)
Last week, T.Loop had the privilege of hosting a delegation from Blackpool Council, CNI (Co-operative Network Infrastructure), and their heat networks project partner, Networks.Coop, along with representatives from Stockholm Business Region and the City of Stockholm. Their mission: to explore Sweden's cutting-edge expertise in harnessing excess data center heat for urban heating systems.
The United Kingdom is currently implementing progressive policies on heat networks and designated "heat zones" to promote more sustainable urban heating solutions. As part of this green initiative, UK officials are keen to learn from Sweden's world-leading experience in integrating heat recovery from data centers into local district heating grids.
Our collaborative meeting included representatives from Stokab and Stockholm Exergi, creating a dynamic forum for knowledge exchange. T.Loop was represented by Co-founder and Deputy CEO Staffan Stymne and Head of Operations Johan Hedman, who shared our vision for the synergistic relationship between data centers and district heating systems in building a more sustainable future.
The exchange highlighted the critical importance of cross-border and cross-sector collaboration in advancing innovative urban heating solutions. T.Loop is honored to participate in this international dialogue and looks forward to strengthening our partnership with our UK colleagues as they develop and implement forward-thinking policies for sustainable heat solutions.
